Sixth Form Geographers explore the wonders of Iceland
At the end of last term, Year 13 A Level Geography students from the two schools in our trust, Beacon Academy and Uplands Academy, embarked on an unforgettable journey to Iceland. This enriching experience allowed the students to explore the island's breathtaking geographical features and gain invaluable insights into its unique landscapes.
During the trip, students had the rare opportunity to witness the Northern Lights three times and discover some of the world’s most extraordinary natural phenomena. Highlights included visiting lava fields, exploring an abandoned coastal town affected by tectonic activity, and marveling at Geysir’s hot water spouts. The students also walked along the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, visited iconic waterfalls, and saw the rapidly retreating sun house glacier.
The trip culminated in Reykjavik, where the group toured a geothermal power station, experienced the Flyover Iceland simulator, swam in a naturally heated outdoor pool, and enjoyed a meal at the Hamburger Factory.
This immersive trip not only deepened students’ understanding of Iceland's geography but also created lasting memories that will support their academic growth for years to come.
