Teacher Training and Staff Development

We are dedicated to developing world-class teaching and learning through research-based CPD and school-to-school support. We are passionate about training the next generation of teachers and are pleased to be working with UCL Institute of Education in partnership with Sussex Coast Schools Alliance to provide professional development for Early Career Teachers.

We are delighted to present this short film focusing on the personal testimonials of MARK Education Trust teaching and support staff. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that contributed to the film and helped to provide some insight into what they love most about their role and the support and opportunities available to them.

Early Career Teachers (ECTs)

The Early Career Framework (ECF) was introduced by the Department for Education to give teachers more training and development opportunities at the start of their careers.

The Early Career Framework (ECF) sets out what Early Career Teachers (ECTs)are entitled to learn about when they begin their careers. It underpins a new entitlement for two years of professional development designed to help Early Career Teachers develop their practice, knowledge and working habits. We work with UCL and their local delivery partner, Sussex Coast Schools Alliance, to provide our ECTs with excellent training through a skilled team of experienced mentors.

The MARK Education Trust’s induction tutors are Giles Ingham and Bijal Trivedi:

The UCL programme is a fusion of university and school-based expertise working in partnership to create and implement a programme which is:

Knowledge and evidence-based: Informed by a deep understanding of the development needs of ECTs and Mentors.

Drawn from expert theory and current practice: Co-designed by teachers and school leaders, teacher educators and academics with rich experience of translating evidence into practice.

Inquiry-based spiral learning: The understanding of key themes is established in Year 1, which then extended and deepened through three practice-based inquiries in Year 2.

Embedded in practice: The applied learning complements practice rather than being a ‘bolt on’ that would add to workload.

MARK Education Trust employs a large number of Early Career Teachers and is fully committed to their professional development at both Beacon Academy and Uplands Academy.

Initial Teacher Training (ITT)

Great teachers are never forgotten. MARK Education Trust is committed to providing quality training for all staff and has a long tradition of involvement in Initial Teacher Training. We are passionate about training the next generation of teachers, preparing our student teachers effectively for their early careers and beyond. Previous student teachers in numerous departments have progressed to positions of responsibility.

We support a large number of student teachers across the Trust in a wide range of subjects. By recruiting the very best talent to train to teach, we believe we can continue to achieve the very best outcomes for our students.

If you would like to apply for teacher training there are a range of possible routes into teaching supported by Mark Education Trust at both Uplands Academy and Beacon Academy. More information and advice is available through the Get into Teaching website.

School Experience Programme

The best way to know whether teaching is the right career path for you is to come and experience it first-hand.

Our school experience days provide the opportunity to spend a day at either one of our MARK Education Trust academies and gain insight into what a career in teaching may look like for you. You will have the chance to spend time in the classroom and speak to experienced staff including members of the Teacher Training and Development team, some Early Career Teachers and a member of the Senior Team.

The programme is open to anyone over the age of 18 who has a degree or is currently studying towards one.

Please contact Jo Clayforth-Carr with any queries about our School Experience Programme.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

All MARK Education Trust teachers, including ECTs and student teachers attend whole school inset and department development time, where subject-specific pedagogy is delivered. All teachers in the trust are expected to undertake continuous professional development (CPD) appropriate to their role and individual needs. The ethos of our trust is that we seek to give our students the best possible education: this necessitates the constant review and development of our own practices.

We value all our staff – teaching staff and support staff – and recognise that our students’ progress and achievements spring from the quality of the learning experiences which, together, our whole staff can offer. Our students’ development rests on our professional development and it is, therefore, prioritised by school and trust leaders. We are privileged to have two additional inset days each year to support this strategy.

For our teaching staff, we design a comprehensive programme of CPD opportunities based on our academies’ advancement plans. These have a sharp focus on improving and evaluating our young people’s outcomes. Our programmes are developed in partnership with our teachers, leaders and experts and is a collaborative process. These are always underpinned by robust evidence and expertise and are sustained over time.

In addition, MARK Education Trust is active in the development of teaching staff from initial teaching training, progress to middle leader roles, and through to headship preparation.

Leadership

Growing outstanding leaders is one of the best ways to help improve the whole school system. Through a range of leadership courses, peer reviews, shadowing opportunities and secondments, we provide support and training from Middle Leader right through to Headteacher. These include colleagues taking National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) amongst others.
